The Institute for Aerospace Research (IAR) is Canada's national aerospace
laboratory. IAR is one of the National Research Council's research institutes.
Air-Coupled Ultrasonics
This new
method allows non-destructive ultrasonic testing of materials without the
usual need for liquid or gelatinous couplants between the ultrasonic transducer
and the specimen of interest.
Both wideband and narrow-band studies are possible, the latter being accomplished
via a RITEC RAM-10000 super-heterodyned receiver for improved signal-to-noise
ratios. System control is completely automated through a PC, and allows air-coupled
ultrasonic resonance spectroscopy studies to be made with material samples
through a special swept-frequency mode of operation. http://www.nrc.ca/iar/smp_nde-e.html
